Innovation: Event Team

An article published at IMEX 2023

During our 20+ years in the event industry, we’ve engaged various management models for staff, contractors and suppliers.  As the founders of Techne Events (2021), our chosen approach to HR is based on relationships with carefully vetted, mutually committed, long-term contractors and partner-suppliers.  This strategy takes time -  finding the right people, engaging them and nurturing the relationships so they choose to work with Techne.

Admiration, trust and respect amongst the team defines our identity and performance.

The benefits of this employment model include:

  1. Low staffing overhead:

    • Lower pricing, competitive advantage

    • Choosing projects and clients that best match our strengths, culture and passion. This maximizes productivity, client value and team morale. Engaging fulfilling and rewarding projects is key to attracting talent.

    • Less stress, more joy!  Our clients feel it.

    • Team retention and satisfaction - contractors co-define role and relationship.

  2. Excellence - the event team is made up by individuals best-suited to the clients’ vision and event purpose.

  3. Less time managing staff - woot woot!  = more time to serve clients, manage the business and do what we love most - creating, planning and producing.

  4. Harness the full potential of suppliers and treat them as partners.  What additional services can they provide?

  5. New ideas and inspiration - grow stronger, wiser and more creative by expanding the talent roster. Build networks.

What does it take to succeed with this model?

GREAT RELATIONSHIPS.

  • Treat contractors and suppliers with care and respect.  Listen to their needs and advice. Be flexible and open to new ideas. Be honest, be generous, build trust.

  • Consider suppliers and venue teams as valued partners.

  • Facilitate and support - help passionate experts be their best.

  • Harness strengths and shore up limitations.

  • Solve challenges together in the moment (vs. defend/blame)

A thoughtful and inclusive team structure provides opportunity for team members to affect and impact results; it attracts top talent and drives excellent results.
It’s key to our business model and aligns with our values.
